Moments that feel like a déjà vu when they’re happening, and still feel like a déjà vu when they turn into a memory.

Moments that are puzzle pieces, but you only figure out where they fit later on.

For me most of those memories live hazy in my brain. They feel dreamy. The lighting is always dim and slightly blue.

There are some memories that have a special place in your psyche.

This is one of mine.

It’s the summer I turn 17. I’m in Monaco. I’m in a rare moment of downtime during a ballet summer intensive. Yes, it’s just as grueling and also as romantic as it sounds.

Soft, late afternoon light spills in through an ancient window.

I’m sitting on my friend Quincy’s bunk bed in our dorm room.

I hear the sounds of our other roommates giggling. They’re teaching each other dirty words in each of their own languages. That summer I learned a few flirty phrases in Italian, Russian, and Swedish. I can’t remember any of them now.

But what I do remember is this moment. This memory feels wide, and sparkly. Even though I was holding back tears.

I don’t mean to be cheesy babes, but this is the first time someone read me my birth chart.

And the tears were there because I had never felt so seen. So understood.

Before that I’d been obsessed with reading my daily horoscope from this shitty app (I’ve shared about that here), and my parents actually had my chart done by an epic astrologer when I was born. But I didn’t know anything beyond that my star sign is Cancer.

Quincy pulled up my chart on a website called Astrolabe. It’s super old school. Looks like it was created in the 90s and hasn’t been updated since. (This is not an endorsement for this website lol but have fun with it if you want).

She read off what Astrolabe said about each of my placements, describing to a T my personality, how I see the world, and the things I felt inside but thought no one could see.

My precious, tender, Cancer stellium heart felt validated by the site’s affirmation of my fierce sensitivity. I finally had the words to understand my freedom loving, irreverent side (Aquarius moon). My Virgo Mars type A perfectionist felt called out.

I was absolutely mesmerized.

I felt the truth in astrology. But I didn’t understand the system, and I didn’t know where to look for more info. In the months following I read that website again and again, trying to put the pieces together as best I could.

I think a lot of you are in that place right now. You know your placements. You follow the happenings. You read this Substack. You feel the moons.

But when you show me your co star you’re still pulling up the list, not the circle!!

And not because astrology is beyond your understanding. But because nobody ever explained the architecture underneath.

Astrology is an ancient system.

It has rules. It has structure. It has an internal logic that’s remained relevant for thousands of years, in many many different cultures and contexts.

Astrology resonates so hard because astrology at it’s core is about the human experience.

In our modern day and age, and especially for those of us here who live in cities with so much light pollution, our encounter with astrology can feel disembodied.

We have to imagine the stars.

But for most of human evolution, we had a direct relationship with the sky.

Learning the language of astrology brings us back into relationship.

With the sky, with the earth, with the seasons, with our ancestors, and with the many overlapping and unfolding cycles life holds.

The system of astrology is not random. It’s not made up.

Astrology is the architecture of existence.

Someone asked me recently: why the moon?

And it stopped me for a second.

It’s such a good question.

Honestly, I probably take it for granted.

Following the moon is so woven into how I live and work that I don’t always think to explain it.

It’s less something I do and more how I am at this point.

But I’ve been sitting with the question, so here are a few reasons why I follow the moon—and why it might matter to you too.

Physically & mentally…

The moon influences our physical bodies.

The moon has been shown to literally affect our sleep cycles—and sleep is one of the most essential functions for our health.

Sleep rebalances hormones, supports digestion, boosts cognitive function, repairs muscles, builds collagen — and a million more things that keep us feeling whole.

Just as the moon pulls the tides, the waters of our bodies have tides too: the connection between the moon and the menstrual cycle is wisdom women have known for generations.

On the mental health side, studies show mood and cognition can follow lunar patterns. This makes sense when you think about how mental health, sleep, mood, gut health, and hormones are collaborating in the body.

It’s all connected—mind, body and moon.

By following the moon we make space for the natural cyclicality of our bodies and minds. We treat ourselves as alive, precious, and ever in flux human beings—not productivity machines.

Symbolically & psychologically...

The moon mirrors the rhythm of our life.

Gaining energy, losing energy, replenishing, just as we do each day and night, each week, each season.

By following the moon, we find a home within that rhythm.

Bloom, shed, bloom. Life, death, life.

The moon’s cycle of blooming and shedding, new and full, can be a resonant anchor for inner reflection.

You’ll often hear that in astrology the moon represents our emotions.

And yes, this is one true aspect of what the moon means in astrology.

Collectively, we look to the moon to know the vibes of a particular moment. The moon sets the mood. The moon sets the tone.

On a deeper, personal level, the moon represents memory.

Soul memory, emotional memory, embodied memory. The way emotions are stored in our bodies. The body keeps score, as we know.

In astrology, the moon reflects how feelings rise, how we find nourishment, how the memory of safety, of nurturing, or lack thereof, lives inside us.

By following the moon we come to know our emotional imprints more fully. We find ways to untangle ourselves from harsh inner shapes, hold our memories with more tenderness, and express ourselves more freely.

Our ancient timekeeper…

Before we were all forced to follow the Gregorian calendar, we kept time by following the moon.

The moon told us when to go, when to stay, when to plant, and when to harvest.

By following the moon, we find ourselves synced with an ancient rhythm, one rooted in our bones, and our breath. One that shows us time is a dance with the infinite unfolding mystery of life, not a countdown to zero.

To follow the moon is to remember that we belong to something larger—something wise, fluid, ancient and ever new.

We don’t have to push so hard to become.

We can rest in the rhythm of our becoming.

We can soften into the dance of life, and still welcome more and more of who we are.

This is what following the moon is about.

A space to witness yourself, to reset, to re-root.

To remember that time isn’t just passing—it’s offering itself to you, cycle by cycle, to live more meaningfully, more fully.

You just have to be willing to listen.

Be your own center of gravity.

Regularly ask yourself, where is my center of gravity right now?

There’s something seductive about placing your center of gravity outside yourself. You may feel like a hero. You may feel like a holy martyr.

But without being rooted in your own gravity, life always feels a little off. Love feels a little out of reach. Your hungry ghosts eat first, leaving you living off breadcrumbs and last drops.

Being your own gravity isn’t about ego games, or parodies of confidence. It’s a way of life where your heart becomes your safe haven, where you are your own anchor no matter what’s thrown your way.

Cherish the inbetweens.

Inbetweens are sacred. They’re where all magic lies.

You may have been taught to rush through the inbetweens, set the next goal, catch the next high. You may find that in your inbetween state you freeze, forgetting the sun always rises again. You may feel impatient with life, wanting to tell the story, the happy ending, more than you want to live the journey.

The inbetween is part of the dance. An exhale always comes before an inhale, and comes after again. When you fall into trusting the rhythm of life-death-life1, you squeeze the sweetness out of every moment. And you become free.

Find the medicine.

Different times call for different medicines. Know what your medicine is now, and know when to put it down in service of something new.

The medicine of play, the medicine of commitment, the medicine of plants, the medicine of sobriety—they each have their time and purpose.

Dancing is required.

Self explanatory.

Your participation is required.

Life is made up of choices. You can’t sit this one out.

From the soul’s perspective, choices aren’t about choosing right or choosing wrong. Choice is just choice.

You can keep choosing your pattern, but do it on purpose, to see what you learn.

I can still smell the gasoline-like fumes of the pointe shoe glue.

I can still feel the rough knit of the grey carpet, the cold beams of the fluorescent light.

I can still hear Tchaikovsky being played on piano for swan lake rehearsal, the taps of twenty fluttering swans echoing from the next room.

It’s 2012. I’m living in New York City, pursuing my dream of being a ballet dancer. I’m training day and night. I’m on a break between classes, sprawled on the floor in a straddle, legs playing tetris with those of my fellow dancers.

Sadly, this is my favorite moment of the day. In the time between classes I get to check the daily horoscope app I paid .99 cents for and see what my day might hold.

I didn’t really understand depression back then, but I knew I wasn’t well.

Let’s just say at this moment in my life, mental health was bad. Physical health, also bad. I was kind of a mess, which might be fine for a normal teenager but I was on a mission. My ballet career hadn’t even begun, and I was already fighting back its expiration date.

So there I was, sprawled out, not daring to miss an opportunity to stretch in my free moment, clicking into my horoscope for the day, hungrily waiting for the app to load and reveal my destiny.

It didn’t matter that the app looked like one of the first things to ever be created on the internet, or that it was probably all written by an algorithm. It didn’t matter that some days it was completely wrong (it wasn’t always!).

Every time I’d open it, there was this little spark of hope, a hitched inhale, a rush of adrenaline, a child’s heart aching and wishing to hear something “good.” Inside I quietly prayed, maybe someone will see me today. Maybe someone understands. Maybe there’s a reason. Maybe today will be better.

Looking back I can see that there was a touch of what’s called fortune telling addiction in my compulsive horoscope reading. Though this wasn’t my worst addiction at the time, it was a kind of medicine for me then.

All addictions are some kind of medicine. Meant to numb the pain we’d rather not feel. Meant to numb the truths we’re not willing to face. Meant to mask our disappointment with the sometimes grey, sometimes utterly colorless reality of life.

Fortune telling addiction is actually a serious mental condition. Almost like a gambling addiction, it can deeply derail someone’s life. It’s a version of engaging “spiritually” that only serves to disempower, keeping the seeker second guessing all their choices, and even mistrusting their own thoughts, feelings, and intuitive voice.

The horoscope app became part of my daily habit, but I can’t say it ever helped me. Reading it was like scratching a bug bite—there was relief in the moment, but it actually only made the itch worse.

When the daily horoscopes eventually started feeling repetitive and useless, I stopped checking the app.

Most horoscopes are full of shit.

They hook into the part of you that wants answers to impossible questions, and is willing to stretch into the strangest shapes, as a way to avoid feeling fear.

But the thing is, this is how most people engage with astrology, at least at the beginning…

About a year after my daily horoscope addiction came to an end, I discovered the work of Mystic Mamma, and a new, deeper, relationship to astrology began to emerge.

My very! groovy! and very!! energetically tapped in mama forwarded me an email about the full moon. It wasn’t your typical astrology newsletter—it was full of gorgeous art and poetic writing, with insight about the full moon from real astrologers who were putting their name on their work.

The words touched my heart, not my fears. They made me ask more questions, not spin out on answers I did or did not want to hear.

From then on my practice with astrology became a dance with the moon. The moon kept me in rhythm with myself.

Every new and full moon I’d take the Mystic Mamma inspo and use it to fuel my own rituals.1 I’d take the astrologers’ words, and reconfigure them as questions, using the cosmic info as a mirror and guide, not a parking spot for my anxiety.

When I decided to take astrology seriously and step into this role, I was very clear that I wanted to do things my own way—a way that actually supports and nourishes, not profits off of fear and anxiety.

And I’ll let you in on a little secret… I had a LOT of inner resistance to sharing astrology publicly and making it my work! I hated the idea of being in a position that disempowers others, as I was in those early days of horoscope obsession.

So the first time I sat down to write a horoscope, they came out as questions—just like the questions I’d created for myself for years.

I called them reflective horoscopes, because they are just that.2

Reflective horoscopes are one way of using astrology to open up space within us. They are cosmically timed windows, meant to reveal what truly lives inside our minds and hearts.

They are my answer to the hollow norm of horoscopes using shallow predictions that give us a quick high, but like scratching that bug bite don’t actually help the healing process, and sometimes make it worse.

Questions lead us into the energy of discovery. Questions feed curiosity, growth, freedom, the pursuit of truth. Predictions, whether they end up being true or not, lead us into fixation on imagined futures, and, too often, fixation on our fears.

Reflective horoscopes are intended to reflect your wholeness, to be a light in dark moments, and to lead you back home to you.

Reflective horoscopes seek to honor the wisdom you already carry within.

It’s Friday the 13th again, and if you’ve been here with me for a minute you already know my thoughts on this “unlucky” day.

I’ve had many experiences of my work as an astrologer being dismissed as “superstition.” Though most people I meet these days are genuinely curious, open-minded, and already in touch with their own connection to the divine, my profession still gets mixed reactions.

Some people think I’m about to reveal their doom, and some respond with “oh, I believe in science” (yes, this one is always from condescending men, and I have a lot fun mirroring that energy back to them).

The one reaction that pulls at my heart strings is this certain kind of grimace—a “been burned before” look. This usually comes from someone who’s had one too many bad readings. And honestly, I get it.

Not all readings are created equal.

There are plenty of unskilled practitioners out there—just as there are unskilled doctors, mechanics, or chefs. The spiritual world is no different.

I’ve had my share of bad readings, too. Readings that felt manipulative, or were full of overly specific predictions that didn’t come true. Readers who gave vague insights that left me more confused than when I arrived, or whose advice was so detached from reality that it completely lost any meaning or usefulness.

But I’ve also had readings that deeply shifted my perspective, helped me face uncomfy truths, and resourced me with inspiration and encouragement to take my next step forward.

So, how do you avoid the bad ones and find the good? Let’s discuss!

Why Bad Readings Happen

Bad readings often come down to one of two things: the skill (or lack thereof) of the reader, and the state of mind we’re in when we seek guidance.

Not all readers have the same approach, experience, or ability to hold space. Some are deeply intuitive but lack technical knowledge, so their read feels non-specific or off base. Others know the techniques inside and out but struggle to connect on a human level or communicate their insights in a way that resonates.

On the flip side, there’s our role as seekers. When we’re desperate for answers, it’s easy to fall into a pattern of getting reading after reading, pulling card after card, hoping for a specific answer that quells our fears.

This is called “fortune-telling addiction,” and it’s a real thing. Almost like a gambling addiction, or obsessively playing the lottery—you keep asking, hoping for a win, but the result leaves you feeling fearful and disempowered.

Ultimately, good readings require a balance: a skilled, grounded practitioner and a seeker who is both open and discerning.

Know Yourself

One of the most important things you can do is check in with yourself before, and after, a reading.

If you’re feeling emotionally fragile, it’s especially important to be intentional about who you’re sharing that tender space with. That’s not to say you can’t get a reading when you’re emotional or struggling. I’ve had some of my most meaningful readings during times when I felt completely lost. But there’s a difference between seeking guidance and rigidly seeking a specific answer.

A random TikTok psychic might be fun for curiosity’s sake, but if you’re in a vulnerable place, you’ll want to make sure you’re in the hands of someone who holds their role as a channel and guide with care and reverence.

The post-reading check in is equally as important.

Have a debrief moment with yourself to clarify what resonated with you, and what didn’t. This is essential for moving forward from the reading feeling centered in yourself, and helps illuminate any action steps you want to take based on the insight you received.

Choose Your Practitioner Wisely

If you’re considering a reading, take the time to find a someone who aligns with you. Recommendations from friends are a great place to start. If you’re exploring on your own, take a sec to read someone’s testimonials and pick up hints from how they describe their offering. Get a feel for their energy and their approach.

Remember your agency in this process. Ask yourself, is this someone whose perspective I actually want to hear?

It’s also helpful to understand what type of reading someone offers. Are they focused on psychic predictions, soul level guidance, or more of a practical life coaching vibe? Different practitioners bring different strengths, so clarity about what you’re looking for can go a long way.

Remember, readers are human.

Their advice and interpretations will inevitably be influenced by their own beliefs, cultural background, and life experiences. That’s not a bad thing—it’s just something to keep in mind. Kind of like choosing a therapist, you get to decide if you want a perspective that aligns with your worldview, or one that offers a different lens.

A Reader’s Perspective

This past weekend, I was doing readings at a holiday market here in NYC. The energy was chaotic and exciting with a huge volume of joyful holiday shoppers coming through the space, and many experiencing an astrology reading for the first time.

In environments like that I’m reminded of how important it is to approach this work with integrity. People are sharing their hopes, fears, and heartfelt questions with me, and I never take that lightly.

I’m not here to hard-sell astrology. Mystical practices aren’t for everyone, and they never have been. But when approached with care, they can open profound portals for self-discovery and growth.

The Takeaway

The best readings aren’t about hypnotizing you with a promise of all the right answers. They’re about holding space for you to explore your own path with curiosity and courage. The right practitioner can help you see yourself more clearly and navigate life’s challenges with a little more grace.

So, if you’re considering a reading, trust your intuition. Find someone who feels like the right fit. Know yourself and what you’re really seeking. And above all, approach the experience with an open heart and a healthy dose of discernment.

Astrology has been having a moment for a while now, and you might have noticed that your Sun, Moon, and Rising signs make for a great conversation starter.

There are 2 main ways we can use astrology.

(Pretty much all astrology offerings you see will fall under one of these umbrellas).

1. Managing Our External World.

   This type of astrology is about timing, predictions, and preparing for the cosmic “weather” ahead.

   When should you make a move in your career? When will a relationship bloom, or find completion? Etc.

   It’s about knowing how external events might unfold, and preparing for them.

2. Managing Our Inner World.

   This type of astrology is about self-awareness, shifting patterns, healing, and growth.

   It’s about aligning with your authenticity, and making sense of the emotional and spiritual journey you're on.

   To me, this is where the true magic lies!

Now, I use both approaches in my practice.

Just like it’s helpful to know when you’ll need an umbrella, knowing the cosmic “weather” can help us feel more prepared, and in flow with life.

But in reality, we can’t control the external world.

Life will always throw us curveballs, and no matter how psychic or skilled an astrologer is, humans make errors when predicting the future.

To me, living well means being fully engaged in the present.

Being in touch with our inner world helps us meet any external circumstance with self trust, empowerment, and authenticity.

When we use astrology for self-discovery, we unlock profound power.

Synchronicities show up, doors open, and we move through even the triggering and painful times with a deep sense of purpose, freedom, and confidence.

For them, self care looks like making space for their hobbies and passions, and for things that spark child like awe. Fire moons have a natural vitality and are deeply creative. They need daily outlets for their abundance of energy.

For many years I battled with my body.

My body was my enemy, one of us always punishing the other.

My young ballerina life did a lot of damage… but in some way we are all healing from the patriarchal narratives around what bodies are supposed to be / do / look like.

It is with and through the body that we can experience life at all.

An altar is a place where something holy occurs. It’s where we worship, pray, make commitments, and spill our hearts out to the kind benevolent parent we imagine is “up” there listening.

When the world is ripping at the seams before our very eyes, our inner healing work is more important than ever.

Both because we likely need to put more of our grounding tools into practice to stay ready to support our communities near and far, and also because when we deeply attend to our inner world we do our duty to the collective to not add more violence to it.

When we make the effort of examining our inner biases, our ego … all of it … we no longer project those things out onto the world.

Our inner world carries all the seeds of our purpose and service.

The more we are able to tend to what is within us with fully open eyes and with compassion, the more we can engage with the world around us in the same way.

Astrology can seem so trivial.

But I think that’s because it is often used in the cheapest and most trivial of ways.

The potential of astrology goes so deep, and so wide.

Astrology is not just a party trick. And it’s not just a way to label people into categories we either like or dislike.

Astrology is a map for engaging with the full spectrum of our lives from our relationships, to our career, our skills, our family, our friendships, our joy and pleasure, our karma, and our pain.

And it is a sacred guide for engaging with all parts of ourselves, our inner critic, our inner child, our inner leader, our inner victim, our inner victor.

Staying steady through the times we have entered will be no less than a challenge, and using tools like astrology to spiritually bypass is not the way forward.

Turning a blind eye to the world is a false steadiness. It’s like doggy paddling with great white sharks swimming underneath your feet.

The false choice to “only see light” eventually lessens our ability to actualize material resources, as well as our hopes and dreams.
