Over on IG this week I did a big Love Astrology Q&A. We went super deep as this is a topic I could talk about forever, so I wanted to consolidate some of my most asked Love & Compatibility Astrology Questions, and share them with you here. I’ve tried to keep my answers concise, but fair warning… I have a lot of thoughts.

When it comes to love and astrology, I want you to remember that the best use of astrology is not to tell you who to be or who to love. Don't undercut your personal agency by playing the he loves me, he loves me not game.

Instead, use it to understand yourself more deeply so you can make choices in love with more clarity, wisdom, and connection to your authentic heart.

Okay, let’s get into it!

As an astrologer, if you’re on a date with someone, do you want to see their chart right away?

I’ve had such an evolution with this.

I used to have a rule that if I was truly interested in someone I wouldn’t look, so I could get to know them without projecting my own stories onto the dynamic. (When you feel attraction it’s easy to project, with or without their chart.) But then I had situations where I wished I’d seen their chart sooner, because I could have seen through some of my projections and engaged more intentionally. So I started looking at everyone’s chart immediately, and that made things feel imbalanced. Knowing their chart became a way of hiding, an emotional safety mechanism that actually kept me stuck. I wasn’t fully present or able to enjoy dating while doing so much astrology gymnastics in my head.

Now I don’t have a hard rule. I trust my intuition and trust I’ll see their chart when I’m meant to.

What’s the deal with twin flames? And soulmates, do we only get one?

Twin flames is a whole spiral I could rant about, but I’ll do my best to keep it brief. It’s a controversial concept that has been used to manipulate people (look up the Twin Flames Universe documentaries if you’re curious). The basic idea is that you have one kind of extreme soulmate who is your perfect other half. To me this concept is philosophically flawed and makes me want to gag!!

Often, when people describe their “twin flame” relationships, the stories are intense, obsessive, and even abusive. So the whole idea gives me major pause.

I’m not discounting that there are people we meet and just feel like magnets with, like our souls are just on the same page. But explosive attraction doesn’t always lead to healthy, or even long term, relationships. Most often, inexplicable chemistry is rooted in unconscious patterns that want to be seen and faced. Our unconscious is at the wheel, driving us towards the people who are a perfect match for our own inner turmoil. Through them, hopefully, we learn and grow.

If you find yourself fixated on a twin flame type of connection (it happens to all of us <3), I’d recenter on yourself. Ask yourself, what feels missing within me? I don’t mean to be harsh, but I’ve always felt this concept preys on insecurity rather than empowers the heart.

As for soulmates, of course we don’t have only one. Why would the vast cosmic soul of you be limited to one single true connection? I find that idea dogmatic and kind of patriarchal. I believe we have many soulmates, and all our relationships, whether friends, lovers, partners, enemies… they all contribute to our soul’s growth.

Astrology doesn’t say any one thing about soulmates, but it does show how souls are connected. That immediate I know you feeling is always evident in the charts. The romantic notion of one soul mate though, I don’t buy in. Pets can be soulmates too.

How do I know if we’re compatible?

This is the question I get most, usually phrased as a list of placements: “I’m a Pisces sun, Capricorn moon, Virgo rising and they’re a Sag sun, Cancer moon, Aries rising... are we compatible?”

Compatibility is deep and layered. I don’t like to typecast based on sun signs, or even a list of placements. You have to look at the whole chart. So much is missed when we focus on placements rather than the deeper layers, the dynamics of the charts, and the specifics. You can’t get this from an app. You need a skilled professional who can read the conversation between two charts.

When it comes to compatibility, what’s more important is asking yourself, what kind of relationship do I actually want?

Your average compatibility advice will be heteronormative, monogamy-focused, and based on the interpreter’s own ideas of what a ‘good’ relationship is. What matters more is knowing yourself. Do you want a relationship that pushes you, where your partner has different perspectives and you grow from the friction? Do you want harmony, shared values, shared culture, ease? Something else?

Two people with very similar charts will understand each other’s love language easily, but they’ll also share the same blind spots. Different love languages don’t mean incompatibility, just a need for good communication and willingness to learn how your partner is different from you.

So before you ask astrology if someone is right for you, ask yourself what you want. The charts can show the potential of a connection, but you get to decide what kind of love you're looking for.

Why do I keep falling for the same sign when it never works out? How can I stop repeating the cycle?

You don’t need astrology to recognize you have a type. But your birth chart can give insight into why, into what keeps you hooked on the same relationship loop.

When we’re magnetically drawn to someone who ends up being painful, we’re usually attracted to something unresolved in ourselves that their behavior is mirroring.

One layer to look at to understand your love blind spots is your 12th house. Someone who’s chart activates your 12th house will unknowingly awaken the patterns you don’t realize you’re participating in. These relationships come with big lessons, usually learned the hard way.

I’m not saying you should avoid these people (you literally can’t, you will always be drawn to them), but know that conflicts may come out of left field because their energy pushes on your blind spots. With good communication, self-awareness, and self-responsibility, 12th house synastry can also be deeply healing.

When it comes to stopping that loop, there are a few keys. The first key is understanding the pattern. You have to see the pattern in order to shift it. Your birth chart helps with this by giving language to the roots of your relationship dynamics, usually based in early childhood.

The second key is timing. There are windows of time that are most potent for working through inner love patterns, and when you know that timing you can lean into your healing work to the max. Riding your cosmic momentum instead of resisting it creates a lot of flow, and self trust, even when working through something challenging.

The third key has nothing to do with astrology and all to do with presence. Changing our patterns takes real work, and takes time. The more lovingly we can approach our inner world, the more love we can experience both from within and from others.

What can astrology tell me about love timing?

In my practice, I use astrology to offer insight into what your current season is for, but not in a predictive you’ll meet your husband on March 17th kind of way.

I’ve received readings like that in the past, sometimes they hit sometimes they don’t. Either way, I find this style of practice very dysregulating and disempowering. Just not my cup of tea.

What I do find valuable is how your chart illuminates the nature of the time you’re in. Is this a season for healing? For sovereignty? For opening? For closure? Your chart can help you understand how to work with the energy you’re in for the most aligned, joyful, and fruitful path of love.

If you’re in a phase of exploration around your desires, astrology can help clarify where you’ll find the most alignment. And if you’re wondering why love feels elusive or complicated right now, the chart often has something to say about that too.

When it comes to love timing I get asked about everything from breakups to wedding dates. Astrology can speak to both. It can help you understand what a loss is creating space for, or help you choose a date that holds good omens for your marriage. (This is called electional astrology.)

Whether you’re grieving a relationship or planning a wedding, the most important thing to remember is that you are always right on time time. Divine timing doesn’t make mistakes. Trust that.

Can you see past life connections in a chart?

Yes. There are certain astrological signatures that indicate this isn’t your first rodeo together. The north and south node, or vertex and anti vertex are often involved. These relationships come with a sense of unfinished business, and the kind of chemistry that feels more than physical.

This is yet another thing that you can feel without knowing the charts if you are grounded, clear minded, and centered in yourself. If you suspect your relationship has a karmic, past-life vibe to it, it probably does. Your intuition isn’t separate from the chart, it’s reading the same energy.

The thing to remember is that past life connections do not automatically mean meant to be together forever in this one. When we’re talking about past lives we are going outside of our 3D sense of time. In my perspective, past lives are not linear, and do not wrap up neatly in a nice and tidy bow with a happily ever after. Sometimes these connections come into our lives to teach us something, to heal something, to reawaken something, to complete something, or to simply remind us who we are. These connections can be for a moment, a dance, a six month swirl, or a years long relationship.

The chart can show the nature of that bond and what it’s asking of you. But it’s still your choice what you do with it.

Eclipse season is upon us, and it’s one of the most transformative times of the year.

From the Pisces full moon this Sunday, September 7th, to the Virgo new moon on September 21st, we are in what’s known as the eclipse portal.

But the energies of these eclipses will ripple all the way through October.

This time of year has that extra swirly feeling.

These are the weeks when life rearranges itself—both within our being, in who we know ourselves to be and how we feel inside our lives, and in our external life, in our relationships, where we work, or where we live.

Eclipses are catalysts.

They shake things up. If you’re facing big decisions, intensity, confusion, or are teetering on the edge of some big unknown, you are right on time.

Remember that eclipses are not all bad.

Whenever we talk about big change, that can stir up fear. But big, beautiful new chapters, new doors, can open during eclipses.

Eclipses are not times to overly predict or worry about what’s going to happen. It’s more about how you’re moving through this time that matters.

With that said, here are 3 things for you to keep in mind:

1 | Focus on grounding

The more you can stay calm, clear, and connected to your heart and highest self, the better.

From that grounded place, your decisions—big and small—can come from the version of you you’re stepping into, not the one you’re leaving behind.

2 | Let this time change you

These eclipses are on the Pisces–Virgo axis, which means that radical change is majorly possible right now.

We all know that change is not comfy, and eclipses do challenge us. They’re confronting. They ask us to step out of our comfort zone, out of past patterns, and into a more wide-open unknown.

Often, our blessings come wrapped in the disguise of things getting stripped away.

Don’t try to figure everything out right now.

Mercury retrograde in Leo begins this Friday, July 18th.

Ah!

Now, this may sound strange, but every time I see a retrograde coming I actually get excited.

Kind of like that butterflies feeling you get when buckling up for a big roller coaster… excitement, anticipation, adrenaline… we’re about to go on a ride.

This Mercury retrograde in the stars of Leo is a peak time in the major transformative astrology of summer 2025.

This retrograde will absolutely trigger us. It will ask us to face some fears.

This is a time to remember that every one of our triggers is a direct doorway towards our inner freedom, and highest potential.

If you can align your mindset and get excited about traveling through the unknown, this retrograde time could actually be fucking amazing.

Okay my loves, don’t fall for all that retrograde fear stuff!!

Here are my 3 keys for making the most of this, or any, Mercury retrograde:

1. Slow it down

Pause, breathe—don't rush through life.

Rushing is where Mercury retrograde gets us. Mercury retrogrades are known for weird frustrating tech hiccups, and spicy miscommunications because we're rushing, or reacting.

We're missing details. We're making assumptions.

Our reactions are a mirror. Our assumptions are a mirror. Our impatience is a mirror.

During a Mercury retrograde, we’ll often get immediate feedback about the kind of energy our reactivity puts into the world, or the reprocussions of past reactive actions catch up with us.

It takes an extra dose of commitment to presence to stay grounded during a Mercury retrograde.

Keep reminding yourself to slow down and pause, especially if you’re feeling activated.

2. Know how this Mercury retrograde is impacting your life, specifically

Each retrograde has it’s own unique story.

Your birth chart gives clear directives about what Mercury wants you to see, what angle you’ll be triggered from, and what kind of transformation is possible right now.

There’s a specific area of life you want to pay attention to, reflect on, and that you are reworking and re-envisioning throughout this retrograde time.

3. Honor Mercury

When you have reverence for the spirals of life, all the twists and turns, and for this greater cosmic web that we're a part of, things go better, babes.

I'm sorry to all my control freaks out there, but this is what Mercury retrogrades are about. They show us where our rigidity, and our narrow vision is keeping us stuck. They remind us that a lot of life is not within our control, and they encourage us to move with the kind of inner integrity that allows for true adaptability.

Making an offering and saying a prayer to Mercury in earnest, with heart, with presence and intention, will make a difference in your retrograde experience.

Your retrograde ritual doesn’t have to be complex or fancy. It doesn’t have to follow a script. It just has to come from you.

Hints: Mercury likes lavender, sparkly things, silver, money, sweet smells, and bright colors. Since this retrograde is in Leo, you may want to light some candles to honor the fire energy at play. Start with getting grounded in your body and breath, and then let yourself flow. Make this moment sacred.

With Valentine’s Day coming up it feels timely to offer some important reframes and set the record straight about this topic.

I’ve compiled some of the most common questions I get asked about compatibility astrology below.

If you’ve ever spiraled after Googling “Are Aries and Cancer soulmates?” or felt personally victimized by The Pattern app (no shade, it’s actually one of my faves), this is for you.

What should I look for in someone’s chart?

My response to this is always the same: What do you want?

99% of the Google results you’ll find about relationship astrology are based on flat, outdated ideas about personality, emotional needs, and human desires, plus they’re bloated with cultural assumptions about what a "good" relationship is (typically heterosexual, monogamous, and geared toward marriage and children).

Are you looking for a slow-burn love that starts with safety and builds over time? Or a connection that shakes you awake, no matter how messy it gets?

Your birth chart—and theirs—can reveal so much about attraction, chemistry, and long-term dynamics. It shows where things flow easily, where there’s tension (the sexy kind and the frustrating kind), and where growth is made possible together.

Instead of getting lost looking for a sign in the charts, start by being honest with yourself about what you want. Then, turn to the astrology and see what kind of insight you gain.

Does astrology determine if a relationship will work or not?

Astrology doesn’t dictate whether a relationship will succeed or fail. That depends on the people involved, and their active choices.

You don’t need astrology to tell you who you’re attracted to, that’s something you know from within. But astrology can help you understand the dynamics at play in your relationship habits, what you’re unconsciously drawn to and why, and how to evolve in your relationships.

Astrology reveals how two people’s energies mix. Think of it like you’re combining flavor profiles. Some flavors are an obvious combo, others’ you might not think of but they really work, and some combos just aren’t our fave. We all have different taste.

Anytime I analyze a chart, I check my assumptions. My job isn’t to project my own ideals onto someone’s chart—it’s to illuminate the gifts and challenges within a relationship, offering insights that nourish greater love and alignment.

Astrology can not tell you for certain if a relationship will work. What it can provide is greater insight into the nature of your flavor combo, where there’s ease, where challenges may arise, and what making the relationship work will require.

What’s more important in relationship astrology—sun signs, moon signs, or something else?

I really hate narrowing astrology down to placements. You cannot boil an individual, let alone two people, down to their placements. It’s boring and loses so much depth.

That said, when I look at relationship charts, I pay attention to:

• Positive Saturn connections. This indicates long term potential.

• How the Moon signs relate. Your moon sign reveals your emotional needs and how you process feelings. The way two people’s Moons interact gives crucial insight into how they can support each other emotionally—what makes the other feel safe, secure, and nourished.

• Mars chemistry. Venus is often linked to love and attraction, and she’s a big part of the picture, but I find the Mars chemistry to be just as important. Mars represents how we move through the world, strategize, take action, and how we create, and resolve, conflict. Mars chemistry will tell you about the practical nature of a relationship—how you make decisions and move through the world together. Mars is also about sexuality and desire, so Mars chemistry also gives a relationship some spice.

• Destiny points (North & South Node, Vertex). If these are activated between two charts the relationship will feel intense, deeply meaningful and transformative. These connections catalyze growth for both people, but that doesn’t always mean it’s meant to last forever.

By the way, when it comes to planetary chemistry, it gets very specific. It’s not just about which signs you have, it’s about the degrees of each planet, and lots of other nuanced factors. There are so many more layers of meaning to consider than what I’m able to list here.

Can “incompatible” signs have a successful relationship?

This is exactly the kind of thinking I want to dismantle.

What does a successful relationship mean to you? That’s the more important question.

Once you define that, you can ask yourself if a particular relationship aligns with your goals, desires, and real life.

Some people thrive in relationships with those who are similar to them. Others are drawn to connections that challenge them and expose them to new worlds. In general, we want a balance—some areas of natural harmony (sameness) and some areas of tension (contrast). Esther Perel talks about the dance between love and closeness versus eroticism and distance—we need both.

Success isn’t about whether your Sun signs "match." It’s about whether the relationship nurtures what’s true for you at this point in your life.

Are twin flames and soulmates a real thing in astrology?

I have strong opinions on the whole twin flame and soulmate idea.

To me, a soulmate is everyone who impacts our life—that includes the people who challenge and trigger us.

The popular idea of a soulmate as a single person we’re "meant to be with forever" is too narrow. My sister is one of my soulmates. We have soulmate friends. Soulmate animals. Even soulmate enemies.

I don’t believe our souls are so concerned with our limited, human fantasies about a perfect life.

How can we reduce the vast depth of our soul to being meant for only one person forever? It feels wrong to me, and doesn’t actually make sense.

You can definitely see soulmate connections in a chart, but there’s not just one thing to look for. Again, there are many types of soul-mates.

The concept of twin flames is something different. It’s become this trendy term for a more intense soulmate, used to describe powerful relationships where you feel like you and another person share the same brain, or where you experience a lot of synchronicity around someone. There’s something magical about those kinds of connections.

But there’s more extreme twin flames rhetoric that has a real dark side, and has been exploited to manipulate tender hearts and cause much harm (if you’re into cult documentaries, there are two on Twin Flames Universe).

Personally, I’m not that interested in whether twin flames are “real” or not, I just don’t find it useful.

There are some gaping holes in the twin flames logic…like that your soul was split in two and you came into this life incomplete, needing to find your other half to be fulfilled. In order to believe in this more extreme version of the twin flames premise, you have to buy into the idea that life on earth is a punishment, and you have to earn a fulfilling relationship by giving up part of yourself. It’s giving twisted dogmatic conversion camp vibes, and I’m just not into it.

What really matters.

At the end of the day, what you want is the first question to ask yourself when it comes to relationship astrology.

Before you deep dive into someone else’s placements, start with your own. What do you need to feel safe, excited, and aligned in love?

The second question is, what does the other person want? And how honest are you both able to be with yourselves, and each other?

When it comes to your relationships, the choice is always yours. The stars simply light the way.

Q: Do you equate spirituality with getting what you want or being above desires?

Okay, obsessed with this question.

I have definitely played on both ends of this spectrum and to me spirituality is both/and, as well as neither. Overly attaching to either of these ideas about spirituality leads us down a limiting path, where we eventually feel bored, dissatisfied, or rebellious, and flip in the other direction.

I think what’s more important is what feels more like truth, and more like growth, at a particular moment. Which “path” of spirituality offers more opportunity for wholeness right now?

At some points in life it's more spiritually important to practice non attachment, finding freedom through releasing immature desires. If taken too far this becomes spiritual bypassing and is self destructive.

At other points it's actually more healthy and needed to focus our attention outwards, asserting agency in our life, and learning self trust by following through on things that challenge us. If taken too far this becomes more about power games than anything else and can be destructive to our relationships.

When you've done the dance long enough it becomes more about balancing both of these goals. Where can I release attachment? Where can I assert myself more?

Astrology helps me understand the timing of these inner spirals, and feel balanced moving through them.

Q: Do you have a good end-of-year/New Year’s ritual?

Typically it involves a lot of journaling, reflecting on the big lessons and big accomplishments of the past year.

I always do a big card pull for myself in early January once I feel fully in the New Year’s energy.

And then a favorite is choosing a word for the year ahead. This practice has been particularly meaningful because the word becomes an anchor for me, and my relationship to it evolves over the year.

My word for 2024 was “FEEL,” and damn did this year serve me lessons about feeling!

This year the Capricorn new moon aligns with the New Year, so I’ll definitely share something fun you can do for that.

Q: Curious your advice for being a sensitive being in a big city. How do you do it in NYC?

This is such an important question. I used to struggle with this a lot.

I first moved to NYC when I was 16, and it was majorly overwhelming. I’ve partly gotten used to it over the years, but there have also been some perspectives that really made a difference.

One perspective shift that helped immensely was from a friend who is an energy/body work practitioner and lived here for many years. I asked her this exact question and she said she had a mantra that went something like, "This city feeds me. It doesn't eat me up." I can't remember her exact words, but the sentiment really impacted me. I love living in this city because the energy is so vibrant and alive. Actively choosing to see it that way was an initial shift.

I also shifted my perspective about nervous system regulation. It’s unrealistic to expect to feel calm all the time—life demands moments where our fight-or-flight chemicals kick in. Every morning, I ground myself with practices to start the day as calm as possible. When activated, I’m grateful my survival instincts are intact.

If I don’t actually need to run or fight, I’ll shake it out or use my breath to re-regulate. It's not about being perfect, our systems have adapted like this over thousands of years for a reason and are trying to protect us as best they can.

I also do wear protective amulets, practice energetic cleansing, and say words / prayers of protection for myself and others daily. Witch things!

Q: When is the best time to get a reading?

Honestly, whenever you feel called.

In my experience, readings always happen in divine timing, so trust your instincts. That said, readings around the New Year or birthdays are popular.

Q: What does life look like after Saturn Return? (In it now please give me something to look forward to)

My biggest observation is that before / during the Saturn return, the primary concern is figuring ourselves out. The questions I get from these people sound like, What is my purpose? Who am I meant to become? Where are my people? There's more seeker energy. A lot of asking “why?”

After the Saturn return there's a lot more clarity and confidence about who we are, so the focus becomes somewhat more practical. The main questions I get from these people are about how to align their life with their inner truths. Questions like, how do I find more of a flow state with life? How do I best organize my time to meet my goals? Less asking, how do I find myself?

Typically the Saturn return (29-31 ish years old) kicks our ass so hard that we know what we're made of and trust ourselves more. There's more clarity about who we are, even if we're still finding our direction.

Q: Universe has no center, so all directions are made up. What is astrology based on then?

Astrology places the human experience at the center.

Your birth chart is based on the day, time, and location of your birth—essentially, you are the center point.

Important: Each of us is the center of our own life (our own universe), not The Universe.

Every Mercury retrograde seems to spark a fear-fueled frenzy across the internet.

It's not surprising — with so much disembodied information and conflicting advice floating around, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and unsure of how to navigate this cosmic moment.

One of my biggest frustrations with astrology online is its tendency to hook us into fear and FOMO, instead of empowering us to connect more deeply with the divine and ourselves.

This Mercury Retrograde in Sagittarius has brought some fascinating questions my way, and I wanted to share the answers with you. My aim is to help you feel grounded and aligned in your retrograde choices, far from the noise of confusion.

Let’s dive in!

Q: I’ve been in interviews for a job. Should I avoid signing a contract during Mercury retrograde?

It is very common to hear the advice “don’t sign contracts during Mercury retrograde,” but in this case it’s not necessarily the whole picture.

Mercury retrograde slows us down where we’ve been rushing, and speeds us up where we’ve been avoiding taking action.

If a contract comes your way, take it as an opportunity to approach the situation mindfully. Read every line carefully, ask questions, and ensure you understand the terms completely. Don’t be afraid of slowing down the process with some back and forth.

Embody the energy of being unbothered and unrushed — your presence and clarity will carry you through. A retrograde isn’t a red light; it’s a flashing yellow.

Proceed with intention.

Q: How can I handle family triggers during Mercury retrograde and the holidays?

This is such a relatable question. Family dynamics, combined with Mercury retrograde’s miscommunication potential, can activate our inner child like nothing else. (That famous Ram Dass quote comes to mind: “If you think you’re enlightened, go spend a week with your family.”)

Here’s some things to chew on:

• Retrogrades often bring unresolved emotional material to the surface—witness your reactions with curiosity and self-compassion. Ask yourself, “Which of my inner wounds or unmet needs is being activated? What kind of care do I need from myself right now?”

• Lean on your support systems: therapists, friends, journaling, or meditative practices that help you process emotions, and ground yourself in the here and now.

• I loved this post from the ever inspiring Ayesha Ophelia where she writes, “Lately, I’ve seen more articles than I care to mention encouraging us to sever ties with family over disagreements…Talk about a recipe for sickness and non-belonging. Nature doesn’t work that way. Nature sends nutrients to all who need them—it doesn’t discriminate because it prioritizes the whole.” Being rooted in love means recognizing when we are emotionally resourced enough to address triggers, while also honoring our limits. If you need space, communicate that lovingly and take it. Managing our expectations of others is also a part of inner child work.

See the triggers that come up during this retrograde time as potent guidance, showing you where within needs some self love. Do your best to pause before reacting to triggers, and most of all give yourself grace.

Q: Should I wait to tell a crush I like them because it’s Mercury retrograde?

Not at all! When it comes to serious commitments like contracts or leases, it’s a good idea to slow down. But flirting? That’s playful, spontaneous, and perfectly mercurial.

If this is something lighthearted and fun, go for it! Mercury retrograde might even be giving you that extra push to express yourself.

Q: Is it a bad idea to launch my creative project during Mercury retrograde?

It depends on the project and the nature of the launch. Retrogrades are excellent for testing and refining ideas you’ve been sitting on, especially if they align with Mercury themes like communication, writing, or building community around shared ideas. If inspiration strikes, consider a soft launch, and take note that you may need to revisit some details about the project once the retrograde ends.

For long-term projects proceed thoughtfully. A retrograde isn’t a “no,” but it’s a reminder to be patient and flexible with the process.

Q: I’ve been feeling nostalgic and reached out to an ex. Is this retrograde energy or something deeper?

Retrogrades often stir unresolved emotions from the past. It’s not about whether Mercury is making you do something—it’s about what’s already within you rising to the surface.

When it comes to exes, I encourage you to shift the focus away from questions like, “Are we meant to be?” or “Is this a sign?” Instead, explore the deeper roots of your feelings. Ask yourself:

• What specifically about this person do I miss?

• What version of me do they remind me of?

• What about that time of my life am I nostalgic for?

Times I’ve run into exes during retrogrades have often mirrored versions of myself I’ve outgrown, or areas where I needed more self-love.

Retrogrades are cosmic mirrors, inviting us to see ourselves and our lives more clearly.

Exponential growth can happen during a retrograde if we use this time to explore our inner world with openness and self honesty.

The other day I saw an Instagram post teaching steps for being in the “divine feminine” that suggested you pretend to be helpless so your partner feels more “masculine.”

I was disturbed, lol.

The misguided divine femme talk out there can range from blatantly misogynistic to subtly harmful.

Embodying the divine feminine has nothing to do with how we are perceived.

It has all to do with how present and centered we are in our body, and how willing we are to express all the shades of ourselves.

Swing your hips because it feels good.

Express your pleasure because doing so amplifies the sensation.

Be critical of divine feminine “advice” that focuses solely on how to get attention, how to get “him” to notice you, or how to make “him” happy.

Your divinity can not be measured in external validation.

This image is my favorite imagining of the poet Sappho, an epic ancient artist who completely devoted her life to the divine feminine. Her poems only exist in fragments now, but they touch something very deep in me.

Maybe it’s the fact that Aries is my 6th house, or that I’m basically all Mars & Moon ruled, but I consistently find that my body is my greatest teacher.

This week during my movement practice (Pilates <3) I kept noticing my shoulders creeping up towards my earlobes.

Something in me was determined to get the MOST out of the workout. And that determined tension slowly crawled up into my neck, my breath got shallow, my jaw clenched.

And because I’d just had dental work earlier in the day, that clenched jaw had a serious limit – and I was reminded, through a little jolt of light post-dentist pain, to take a beat, and soften.

I remembered the cues I often give my own students when they feel tense, overly gripping to the movements like something serious depended on it….

I reminded myself that in movement, grace comes from the right balance of tension and ease.

With too much tension, movements become brittle. Forced. Laborious.

But with too little tension, our movements become floppy and sloppy.

Grace is the meeting point between effort and ease.

And it made me think about all the places in my life I’ve been putting so much effort into that I’ve become rigid and tense.

All those things I grip and stress about, that make my neck disappear into my ears, not allowing for any grace, nor any space, nor any sense of flow or ease.

Most often, less force is required for gracefulness to emerge.

And this is a perfect metaphor for Mercury retrograde, which is around the corner (starts Monday!).

In last week’s Aries Season Workshop, someone asked a very poignant question about the confusing advice we hear for Mercury retrogrades.

Some astrologers say to slow down. Don’t do anything! Don’t make any moves! Don’t start anything! Don’t plan anything!

I was saying that sometimes Mercury retrogrades are great times to start things that we haven’t yet started.

Or are times when opportunities arrive, and new ideas emerge.

“So which one is it?” This brilliant student asked, “I’m getting mixed messages.”

The answer is that we have to be honest with ourselves about which side of the grace spectrum we’re on.

If there’s places in our life where we’ve been forcing, rushing, efforting to no avail… where our shoulders are up in our ears and we’re tensing and gripping and grinding our teeth in order to make something work…

Mercury retrograde will come in as a spicy reminder to slow down, breathe, drop the unnecessary effort, and find a little more ease.

But if there’s parts of our life that we haven’t put enough effort into, things we’ve been avoiding starting, or that we’ve been floppy and wet noodle-y about, then Mercury retrograde might help us find the spark, the engagement, or the push of effort we need to start.

As we go into this Mercury retrograde, you’ll definitely hear a whole lot of advice, a lot of do’s and don’ts, and superstitions.

So just continue coming back to what is true for you, and to what feels like it supports you moving with grace.

Talking and thinking about Pluto is daunting.

Pluto represents shadow and pain and death. The god of the underworld seems certainly one to fear.

And when it comes to Pluto transits, we’re thinking about such long periods of time, it can be overwhelming to imagine our lives so far off into the future.

As we’re beginning to taste the new world that’s emerging, we can start to gather the tools that will have us feeling resourced and ready for our Pluto in Aquarius journey.

Tools that curb the overwhelm, and that nourish and enrich our lives both when Pluto is romancing us, and putting us through the ringer.

Here are the tools I’m turning to right now with Pluto in Aquarius in mind:

Breath •

Breath is so so powerful for both up regulating & down regulating the nervous system. Practicing breathwork can help us get comfortable in the whole range of our systems functioning, and also help moment to moment when we need to either activate or calm.

Leo energy / your Sun sign •

Leo is the opposite to Aquarius, and we can always find integration and balance through opposites. Call on the Leo archetype when you need to retain your individuality. Explore the gifts of your personal Sun sign to balance Pluto heaviness.

Today the Sun and Pluto move together into the stars of Aquarius, where they’ll begin to bring light to the new world that’s emerging.

This is significant as Pluto only moves into a new sign every 15 – 20 years.

Pluto’s position in the sky illuminates where our collective ego death is occurring.

Pluto stirs our unconscious impulses, revealing both the destructive and healing potential of the zodiacal archetype it moves through.

In Aquarius, Pluto will fix our gaze on the role technology plays in our lives, and how it transforms our experience of connection, and value.

We are already seeing this play out in many facets of the world.

Interpersonally, Pluto in Aquarius will confront us with the challenge of liberating ourselves from all the places where we are afraid of being an individual.

Where we might be afraid of being seen as different, awkward, or strange, or of not fitting in with the current cultural moment.

Today, Mercury goes retrograde in the stars of Capricorn.

Whenever this transit occurs, we get cute little winks from the universe that tell us, in a mercurial way, to slow down and come back to center.

The world we live in seems almost maniacally designed to pull us as far away from our own gravity as possible.

Our screens seducing us with their bright glow… piles of never ending work… the constant state of stress that is being alive at this time…

How do you locate yourself when the world pulls at you, and pulls you apart? 

I’m about to go down a path that might seem out of place, but just go with me.

I don’t share much about this on Substack, but I’ve been a pilates teacher for almost a decade now.

I know many of you here initially connected with me through pilates!

In pilates, every movement has resistance. Every movement has tension. Every movement presses into space in 360°.

By finding resistance in our movements, our joints and bones remain in an alignment that supports a functional balance of flexibility and strength.

It’s this quality of dynamic resistance, alignment, and support, that creates the experience of confidence, groundedness, and clarity, in our body and being.

This is a metaphor I often return to for the spiritual, emotional, and mental aspects of life as well.

Rather than collapsing when inner resistance comes up, or just avoiding resistance all together, we can shift our perspective to notice what alignment that resistance is helping us to clarify.

Resistance, tension, and the awareness of it, can be a tool for knowing ourselves better.

Sometimes we need to give our spiritual beliefs a little push in order to be confident about where we stand.

Locating yourself is this process.

Finding pressure points.

Using tension to anchor into alignment.

Rebalancing imbalances.

Coming back to center.

Dancing with gravity.

When frustrations naturally arise during this Mercury retrograde, see if you can reframe any tension you feel as helping you find center again.

The tension shows you where you are in or out of alignment.

The tension shows you how you are or are not supporting yourself.

Take a breath, and locate your body in space right now. 

Touch your arms and your legs.

Locate your hands and your feet.

Activate your muscles, then relax them.

Now, locate your mind in time.

Is your mind here? In the past? The future?

Is it around the corner arguing with someone?

Is it somewhere across the world?

There need not be a hierarchy of “where” the mind “should” be.

There may be a very good reason that your mind is not “here.”

Awareness is the key.

When we know where we are we can use all our mental, energetic, and physical power in an even more embodied way.

Given that this retrograde is happening in the earth sign of Capricorn, establishing some kind of movement practice to locate your body each day can be useful over the next few weeks.

Yesterday I guided a 30ish minute mindful movement practice on IG live.

This pilates based sequence incorporates the whole body, and was inspired by the New Moon in Sagittarius!

It contains simple exercises and fundamental movement principles you can come back to over the next month, whenever a bit of movement and breath is needed.

Today is 11.11 ✨

In my honest opinion, angel numbers (repeating numbers such as 1111, 888, etc) have become a kind of silly, and a sometimes shallow version of spirituality (like a lot of the astrology that’s out there right now!!)

On the one hand, I see too much significance being given to them, so that they become vessels for superstition, and on the other hand, not enough significance being given to them so that they also lose their potency of meaning.

Like any form of spiritual exploration, there’s a range of depth with which we can engage.

For me, angel numbers are most often simple reminders of magic in the mundane. 

Whenever I see an angel number on the clock, or out and about, I take it as a sign that I’m in the right place at the right time.

A little divine reminder that life is happening here & now.

It’s a moment to pause, breathe, and feel into my non material support system.

It can also be an affirmation of something I’m thinking, saying, or doing in that moment. 

These are not hard rules and are flexible depending on context!

Like any spiritual symbol, the more you engage with angel numbers, the deeper your relationship with them grows, and their meanings and messages will become more clear to you.

Walk down a street you don’t normally walk down, check out a new place, allow yourself to daydream.

Inviting synchronicity is a practice in loosening control.

We miss synchronicity when we calibrate our gaze too narrowly, and look for something specific.

One of the main ingredients in magic is presence.

Today is the autumn equinox and the start of Libra season.

This energy is like the first page of a brand new journal. Or that first breath of cool fall air that feels so good after the thick mugginess of summer.

It’s an opportunity to start anew.

As Libra season has been approaching I’ve been playing with this idea of being my own gravity.

The concept came to me when I went to see astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson speak about his new book here in New York City.

He does not claim to be spiritual in the slightest, in fact he flat out rejects any spiritual inferences made from his work.

But of course when I listened to him speak about quantum realities, the fabric of time and space, and our ever expanding universe I’m thinking symbolically.

Our experience of gravity as humans is a downward force. It’s grounding. Heavy. It’s our connection to earth.

But if we zoom out to a cosmic perspective, gravity is in all directions at once. It’s 360°.

Gravity is the magnetic anchor that keeps us in orbit.

It’s an invisible relationship between bodies, heavenly or otherwise.

Take a breath, and take a moment to feel your body.

Where is your center of gravity located?

Do you feel it in your belly, legs, feet, pelvis, chest, throat?

Do you feel your center of gravity at all?

Are there ways you could move or change shape so that you have better access to your own gravity?

When we place our energetic gravity on things outside of ourself, there will always come a moment of reckoning with that instability.

We’re so often getting swung around in someone else’s (or some algorithm’s) orbit.

When our inner balance relies on the stability of others, we’re already off center.

And this is a very Libra lesson.

Libra naturally inhabits that invisible space that is the connective tissue between self and other.

Libra energy is like social lubricant. Libra embodies an effortless charm that makes social interactions feel beautiful and sexy and flowing.

The shadow side of this is that sometimes Libra doesn’t gauge when they’ve gone too far from center.

They’d rather yield a bit of their truth to make someone else comfortable. It’s then that they’ve lost themself.

Libra in balance knows that a symphony is made from different notes being played together.

A memorable meal has a balance of flavors.

A dynamic piece of art has dimension and texture.

And of course I don’t mean to say that we can never lean on others for support.

When we are strong in our center, our gravity can be a temporary refuge for others.

Relationships require flexibility, we all share this world.

In being our own gravity we must recognize that others are their own gravity too.

When we’re embodied in our gravity we don’t need anyone else to hold us up. We don’t need anyone to validate our gravity.

It’s simply felt.

Where do you stand on the gravitational spectrum?

Do you get too easily lost in the gravity of others?

Or do you swallow the agency of others with your rigidity?

Or something in-between?

What fortifies your gravity?

What drains you of agency?

As always I’m a fan of acknowledging nuance. We are all doing all of the above to some degree.

We can come back to our gravity through practices that require us to be present with ourself.

Present with our body, our heart.

Our joy is an especially powerful pathway to our gravity.

And when you walk as your own center of gravity, life will come to you.

In being your own gravity a letting go is possible.

You can walk through life held in a perpetual trust fall, supported by the ground underneath your feet.

Throughout autumn we’ll be continually asked to come back to our gravity.

We’ll be asked to stand both in our power and our flexibility, and find a middle way between the two.

What is Mercury retrograde?

Mercury retrograde is a period of time when the planet Mercury appears to move backwards in the sky – from our vantage point here on earth.

Mercury is the fastest moving planet in our solar system, and when it slows down an optical illusion occurs. (Imagine a train next to you moving, making it seem like you're moving backward even though you're still).

Mercury goes retrograde several times each year, which is why this transit is constantly being talked about.

Why pay attention to Mercury retrograde?

Astrologically speaking, Mercury’s movements through the sky impact our mental wellbeing, communication, and how we perceive the world.

During Mercury retrogrades, we often encounter frustrating yet enlightening mishaps and unexpected opportunities, making it a powerful time for reflection and new perspectives.

What's Mercury's significance in astrology?

In Western astrology's Greco-Roman myths, Mercury (or Hermes) represents communication, messages, and trade.

Mercury is curious, playful, and always in many places at once. Mercury embodies the trickster archetype, as well as the magician. As a master of words, stories, and deception, Mercury uses the fickle nature of the mind as their ally.

Although Mercury is often referred to by male pronouns, in art and mythology their gender identity is fluid.

What does Mercury signify in your birth chart?

In your natal chart, aka a map of the sky the moment you were born, Mercury's placement reveals:

• your communication style

• how you learn

• what you are curious about

• how you experience memory

• the lens through which you see the world

What can you expect during Mercury retrograde?

“When you move half as fast, you notice twice as much.” –  3rd Ritual

When a planet is retrograde it invites us to pay attention to its themes.

Mercury retrogrades ask us to slow down and reflect on how we’ve been mentally moving through life.

Mercury retrogrades effect everyone differently, however, there are some common experiences that have given this astrological transit its claim to fame.

Classic Mercury retrograde happenings:

• Technology glitches & crashes

• Unexpected encounters with past lovers or friends

• People you haven’t heard from in a long time reaching out, or maybe you are that person

• Delays / changes in plans. i.e. around travel, contracts, negotiations

• Miscommunications

• Accidental email / text mishaps

• Freudian slips

• The repercussions of lies / gossip coming back around

You’ll often hear the advice to not plan important things during Mercury retrogrades, like signing contracts or launching business ventures.

My belief is that sometimes life can’t wait, and the best we can do is to calmly triple check everything and say a prayer to Mercury for support.

How to prepare for Mercury retrograde:

Mercury is deeply connected to the nervous system, the pathway of communication between our mind and body.

Any tools you have for nervous system regulation can be extremely helpful, especially if this retrograde period brings up things that tend to make you feel triggered.

Some nervous system regulation tools to explore:

• Breathwork. My favorite breath tool for everyday.

• Full body shaking.

• Singing / humming.

• Daily movement practices.

• Co regulation with pets & loved ones.

On the practical side:

• Try to not overbook yourself. The timing we’re hoping for tends to get thrown off in Mercury retrograde. Leave extra time for anything important.

• Back up your computer, proofread before you send, etc.

• Choose the refundable option when possible, just in case plans go awry!

When Mercury retrograde upsets do inevitably happen, the best strategy may be to face them in a mercurial way – laugh with them, see the humor if possible, and see them as an opportunity to practice responding to the situation rather than reacting impulsively.

Missed connections tend to happen when we’re rushing, so a good Mercury retrograde practice is to take a deep full breath before doing or saying something that carries weight for you.

What does bad Mercury retrograde advice look like?

• Be vigilant. Being clear, grounded, and ready, is different from being in a trauma response that creates more anxiety. This is something to explore within your own mind-body experience, or with a qualified practitioner.

• Being born during Mercury retrograde means you are a bad communicator. Communication is a skill we all must learn and grow with throughout our lives. Many people are born during Mercury retrograde. Speak to an astrologer you trust about how this placement shows up in your life.

• Mercury retrograde is a time of misfortune. Challenging and frustrating things can happen at any point in time. Of course we can have difficult or painful experiences during Mercury retrogrades, but it is not an inherently “bad” time.

Take note of the shadow period.

The two weeks before and after Mercury retrograde is called the shadow period.

It is a time to continue to apply thoughtfulness as the retrograde energy is building and releasing.

I’ve found it useful to not take the dates quite so literally, and instead see them as times filled with the potential energy where things may manifest.

The gift of Mercury retrograde.

Retrogrades reflect the fact that our life experiences are non linear.

We spiral in and out of relationships, interests, patterns, and beliefs.

Periods of slow movement, however frustrating, can create the necessary space to head in new and more aligned directions.

Mercury retrograde illuminates how delicate our mental perceptions are, and offers us the ability to see something we might have otherwise missed.

Mercury retrograde also has a way of reminding us that we are not in complete control, which is always a hard lesson for us ego-based beings, but is in the end, a fact of life.
